What is Shiitake?

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is a species of mushroom related to our native mushroom. True to its botanical name, it comes from Southeast Asia and occurs naturally in countries such as Japan, China, Vietnam and Korea. The common name Shiitake is a combination of two Japanese words (Shii - meaning "beech" (tree) and Take - meaning "mushroom") and refers to the conditions in which the mushroom grows. Shiitake most often grows on rotting beech trunks.

Although the common name Shiitake comes from Japan, with which it is currently associated, the tradition of growing and using this mushroom is actually related to China, where it was used in ancient times, among others. in traditional folk medicine.

Shiitake mushrooms, associated by many people mainly as an addition to Asian dishes, also now have a much wider application. Similarly to other vital mushrooms, they are rich in polysaccharides - including  beta-glucans .

Beta-glucans and polysaccharides

Polysaccharides are an extensive group of chemical compounds with long chain molecules made of repeating sugar units. Due to their structure, polysaccharides can be perceived as biopolymers that occur naturally in plants and animals. Polysaccharides include starch, cellulose, glycogen and chitin. Individual polysaccharides have different properties and therefore play different functions, depending on the way in which the monomeric sugar units are linked together and depending on their type.

Another subgroup of polysaccharides, characteristic of mushrooms, are  beta-glucans , which, like cellulose, are a component of dietary fiber, but unlike cellulose, they constitute its soluble fraction. Beta-glucans are part of the cell walls of mushrooms, constituting one of the main structural elements of their fruiting bodies.

From a chemical point of view, they are compounds composed of D-glucose molecules connected by beta-glycosidic bonds. Beta-glucans differ in their chemical structure depending on their origin; virtually every species of mushrooms has its own unique variety of beta-glucans.

What makes our extract unique? / Double standardization

When choosing dietary supplements based on extracts, it is worth checking what the extract is standardized for. Even though many products are based on highly standardized extracts, they usually only refer to the total polysaccharide content. However, there is no information about the content of  beta-glucans , although they are the most important fraction of polysaccharides.

Therefore, information about the total polysaccharide content alone does not determine the high quality of the extract, even if it is 40%, 50% or more percent. These may be alpha-glucans (which include e.g. starch), or, additionally, the polysaccharide content may be artificially increased due to the presence of maltodextrin, which is sometimes added as a carrier to stabilize the extract.

Aliness Shiitake 400 mg  is based on high-quality, double-standardized extract from the fruiting bodies of Lentinula edodes mushrooms, which guarantees the content of active ingredients at least 40% of all naturally occurring polysaccharides and 20% of beta-glucans.
