D-mannose is a six-carbon simple sugar that occurs naturally in the human body, as well as in some plants and fruits. Mannose closely resembles glucose in its structure. However, subtle differences in the spatial configuration of both compounds cause them to have different properties.
Unlike glucose, which is absorbed quickly and directly, mannose must first be converted into fructose and then into glucose. Thanks to this, mannose causes a much weaker insulin response, has a low glycemic index and has a minimal effect on blood sugar levels.
D-mannose and urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infections are a common ailment, especially in women. Their urinary tracts have a slightly different structure than men's and therefore are more susceptible to bacterial infections.
In most cases, the cause of infections is the introduction of bacteria into the urethral opening. The bacteria adhere to the walls of the urethra, multiply, and then move up the urethra to the bladder, causing unpleasant symptoms such as: frequent urination (polakiuria), pain and burning during urination, and unpleasant urine odor.
Recently, there have been more and more publications and clinical studies confirming the beneficial effects of mannose on the urinary system.
