The structure and functions of the eye

The human eye is approximately spherical in shape and is mostly filled with vitreous, a gelatinous substance that holds the eye in place. The eyeball is located in the socket of the skull bone. The eye is composed of a lens with a variable and adjustable focal length, an iris that regulates the diameter of the pupil, and a light-sensitive retina at depth. The other parts of the eye are the cornea, sclera, choroid, optic nerve and conjunctiva. The eye is protected by the eyelids, three-layer tear film, eyelashes and eyebrows.

Eye functions - light passes through the cornea (front part of the sclera) - and then:

• light enters through the pupil regulated by the colored iris,
• successively passes through the lens, which refracts light rays, then through the vitreous body,
• then the rays fall on the inner layer of the eye, the retina, which creates an inverted image,
• through the optic nerve and further components of the visual pathway, nerve impulses are transmitted to the visual centers of the cerebral cortex.

  The retina is a very complex, multi-layered structure whose function is to transform light into nerve impulses, which are then read and interpreted by our brain. It is divided into ten different layers, consisting of light-sensitive cells, the so-called photoreceptors (cones and rods) and from neurons conducting visual stimuli. There is a spot on the retina called the macula lutea, where there is the greatest concentration of cones and is therefore most sensitive to colors and light. In the center of the macula is the central fovea, the point of sharpest vision.
