Selenium – role in the body

As one of the trace elements, selenium is a key micronutrient that performs a number of important functions in the processes occurring in our body.

Selenium contributes, among others, to: to:

  • Maintaining healthy hair and nails
  • Proper functioning of the thyroid gland and immune system
  • The proper course of spermatogenesis
  • Protection of cells against oxidative stress

Why is it worth supplementing with selenium?

The distribution of selenium in the earth's crust is uneven, which means that its presence in the diet of individual populations varies and may be underestimated. It is therefore worth considering its supplementation, especially in the proven and well-digestible form, which is L-Selenomethionine Selenium SeLECT ® .

Organic Selenium SeLECT ® and other forms of selenium

It turns out that not all forms of selenium are created equal.

The uniqueness of L-Selenomethionine is that, thanks to its structure similar to one of the key amino acids - methionine - it is directly attached to proteins in the body through metabolic pathways similar to those for methionine.

In turn, inorganic forms of selenium such as salts or chelates are first broken down in the body into elemental selenium. In this form it is less bioavailable.

A study conducted by the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2005, involving people with low selenium intake, showed that L-Selenomethionine in the form of  Selenium SeLECT ® produced by Sabinsa has twice the bioavailability of sodium selenite. Among the studied people, less than half of the selenium in the form of L-selenomethionine was needed to obtain the optimal level of selenium in the blood compared to sodium selenite.

Another study conducted in 2006 aimed to compare the absorption of selenium in the form of L-selenomethionine, sodium selenite and selenium yeast. Among 81 tested people, it was shown that selenium in the form of L-selenomethionine was absorbed to a greater extent than in other forms.
