Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a crystalline solid or liquid solution. On an industrial scale, it is obtained by the oxidation of trichloroacetic aldehyde (chloral) or by the reaction of acetic or chloroacetic acid with calcium hypochlorite.
Trichloroacetic acid dissolves very well in water and in most organic solvents, especially in: acetone, benzene, methanol, ethyl ether and o-xylene.
Trichloroacetic acid is used in medicine as an antiseptic and astringent, in cosmetics for chemical peeling to eliminate wrinkles, pigmentation disorders and acne scars, and for tattoo removal. In medical analytics, it is used to deproteinize whole blood/serum before glucose determination (for in vitro diagnostics).
Trichloroacetic acid causes serious skin burns and eye damage, and is also a substance that poses a threat to the aquatic environment because it is very toxic to aquatic organisms.
Trichloroacetic acid is also used for local cauterization (cauterization) of pathological lesions and minor bleeding in the oral cavity.

Due to the risk to human health, trichloroacetic acid has been classified in accordance with the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council (EC 1272/2008) as a skin corrosive/irritant substance (cat. 1A). Trichloroacetic acid causes serious skin burns and eye damage, and is also a substance that poses a threat to the aquatic environment because it is very toxic to aquatic organisms.
The values of hygiene standards in Poland for trichloroacetic acid have not yet been established. The Team of Experts of the Interministerial Commission for the Highest Permissible Concentrations and Intensities of Factors Harmful to Health in the Work Environment proposed adopting a concentration of 2 mg/m3 of trichloroacetic acid as the value of the highest permissible concentration (NDS) of the compound and a concentration of 4 mg/m3 as the value of its highest permissible instantaneous concentration ( NDSCh).
TCA Chemical Peeling
TCA peeling is a non-invasive chemical skin treatment used in cosmetic procedures to remove discolorations, scars and wrinkles. These peels are named after trichloroacetic acid (TCA), which is used to remove dead skin cells to reveal newer, smoother layers of skin below.
TCA peels are part of a group of skin treatments called chemical peels, which are used to exfoliate the skin using various strengths and combinations of non-toxic acidic ingredients.
Chemical peels have a medium superficial strength or a strong deep peel. TCA peels are considered potent, which means they should only be used by a certified skin care professional. People who should not use TCA peeling:

- People with poorly healing scars or wounds

What is it and how does it work?
TCA peeling dissolves the cells of the upper layer of the skin (epidermis). As the skin affected by TCA application exfoliates and new cell growth is stimulated underneath.
Once the top layer of skin is peeled off, a layer of completely new skin cells becomes visible. Often, the new layer of skin is smoother and less susceptible to "imperfections" such as wrinkles and acne scars.
TCA peels are usually applied to the face. They can also be used to improve the smoothness and tone of the skin on other areas of the body, such as the back, chest area, neck, and arms.
After applying TCA peeling, you can immediately notice some changes. It may also take three or four days to see full effects.
Once the initial redness disappears from the skin, it begins to feel tight. Over the next three days, the affected area exfoliates the TCA-treated skin. It is normal for the skin to flake off within a few days.
It is not recommended to scratch the skin or tear it with your nails. After complete skin removal, the skin underneath may appear firmer, smoother, brighter and younger, but it is also softer.
During the period of skin peeling, it is recommended to use sunscreen to protect the skin from the sun every day. Wash your face only with a gentle cleanser to prevent your skin from losing additional moisture.
Tattoo removal with TCA Chemical Peeling
In addition to the face and other body parts, TCA chemical peeling is an equally popular method for removing tattoos, during which trichloroacetic acid is applied to the skin . It has exfoliating properties that "peel" the skin layer by layer, removing the ink contained in its structure. Chemical exfoliation is a cosmetic treatment, depending on the chemical substance used and its concentration. Acid-based peels were originally used to treat various skin conditions. They have proven to be very effective in whitening and removing the most aggressive tattoos.
Therefore, a tattoo can be removed with chemical peeling, but the process is long-lasting. This treatment aims to refresh the appearance of the skin by renewing the epidermis. After applying a chemical compound to a selected area of the skin, these substances penetrate deep into the skin, resulting in the loss of connections between the cells of the epidermis layers and their exfoliation.
After a series of chemical peels, the tattoo is removed and the epidermis and skin are renewed. The deeper the peeling, the greater the risk of side effects such as discoloration, scars, and infections, so it is recommended to use the knowledge and experience of professionals.
PRECAUTIONS: If swallowed, do not induce vomiting, rinse mouth with water. Call for medical help immediately. In case of contact with eyes, rinse them with plenty of water and contact an ophthalmologist immediately. In case of contact with skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with water. Immediately immerse contaminated clothing in water and rinse thoroughly.
