Baicalein belongs to the group of flavonoids and is the most important, biologically active component of Baikal skullcap. Baikal skullcap is a plant originating from eastern Russia and the adjacent areas of Mongolia and China. It is a perennial plant with purple, charming flowers in the shape of lion's mouths. It grows to approximately 25-60 cm in height. It prefers a northern climate - cool and dry; it loves mountains, where it often grows on the banks of streams and rivers.

It has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years as an anti-asthmatic, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal, anti-fungal and anti-viral agent.
